ELF LED FLARES LIGHT UP COURTESY BUGGIES

City of Whittlesea ELF

The City of Whittlesea in Melbourne recently used ELF LED Flares to enhance safety at a community event. The council has courtesy buggies that run late into the night and the beacons helped make the vehicles more visible to pedestrians, preventing potential accidents. Sunshine Cross, Events Project Officer for the City of Whittlesea said that the beacons were very helpful.

Vehicle breakdown in the Northern Territory.

My car broke down as we were driving through the red center of the Australia Northern Territory on route back from Alice Springs. As we sat worried on the shoulder of the long road waiting for help, we wondered if many of these huge delivery trucks on the desolate road could actually see us in the diming dusk light. We also then started to wonder if the tow truck we had had called, would be able to see us on the side of this dusty road. We did eventually receive our help from the tow truck and we also survived the ride back after the tow truck eventually found us. That was not a great place to be stuck in the Northern Territory of Australia. After we sorted things out and we got home safely, we looked into getting proper safety signal lights for our car and motorbike for any possible future breakdown.

We had a few important essential requirements when it came to the safety lights. These safety lights had to be dependable, easy to mount on our car door or boot, and had to be tough. In design as they had to be used in all road and weather conditions like rain & hail and strong wind. We started by looking at LED safety flares, as these were non incendiary and were smokeless

Turned out that Secure-Aware had an LED safety device used by cars and motorbikes, called the E-L-F 2 Emergency LED Flare: Type-2. I thought it looked good for two reasons: they’re bright orange LED lights with a magnetic backing, which means you can stick them on the roof or boot of your car. We however wanted to test these ELF’s to see how they performed when travelling at moderate speed.

A deeper look didn’t disappoint. The Emergency Beacons have nine lighting modes, flashing S-O-S and steady lighting, so they’re ideal for roadside safety signalling. These ELF’s also 100% sealed, so they will not stop working in bad weather. They will continue working even if a truck or bus runs them over, so you don’t have to worry about cracking or breaking them. The ELF’s rechargeable battery efficiency makes them very dependable.  ELF’s last around 24 hours on special flashing mode using one of nine different flashing modes.

At $50.00 for a roadside safety beacon, this ELF-2 will not break the bank.

Prevent a Fire: Petrol Station Safety Tips

Prevent a Fire: Petrol Station Safety Tips from Secure-Aware in Sydney…

Since 1980, the number of car fires at service stations has more than doubled, partly because of the increase in the number of vehicles on the road. The Fire Service & SES have also received isolated reports of flash fires, apparently caused by static electricity, while consumers were pumping petrol.

Facts & figures:

  • On average, one in every 13 service stations experienced a fire during the period surveyed, causing extensive damage to property, life threatening injuries to staff and customers and the possibility of death.
  • Two-thirds of fires at petrol stations involve cars. Mechanical and electrical problems cause 75% of vehicle fires at public service stations.

Safety tips:

  • Turn your vehicle’s engine off when refuelling.
  • Keep petrol and other fuels out of children’s sight and reach. Petrol is highly toxic in addition to being a fire hazard. NEVER allow a child to pump gas.
  • Do NOT smoke. Do NOT light matches. Do NOT use cigarette lighters while refuelling.
  • Pay attention to what you’re doing. Petrol is a hazardous substance and transferring it from pump to car is potentially dangerous. Do NOT multi-task, talk on your mobile or chat to the kids etc.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using electronic device such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops or iPods near a petrol pump.
  • Avoid spills; do not top off or overfill your tank.
  • After pumping petrol, leave the nozzle in the tank for five seconds before removing it to avoid drips.
  • If a fire starts while you’re refuelling, don’t remove the nozzle from the vehicle or try to stop the flow of petrol. Leave the area immediately and call for help.
  • Don’t get in and out of your vehicle while refuelling. A static electric charge can develop on your body as you slide across the seat and a spark can ignite petrol vapour. If you do mistakenly get in or out of the car during refuelling, discharge any static electricity by touching metal on the outside of your car as far away from the petrol tank as possible before removing the nozzle.
  • Use only approved portable containers for transporting or storing petrol. Make sure the container is on the ground in a stable position before filling. When filling a portable container, keep the nozzle in direct contact with the container. Do not fill completely. Leave a 10% gap at the top of the container to allow for expansion.
